The dancing school was founded by Ms Bernie Cavanagh BSc (Hons), FCCA, ISTD DDI (Diploma in Dance Instruction) who aims to teach students in a happy, fun and relaxed environment, but to a high professional standard, helping each child reach their true potential.

Teign Valley Dance Academy is a dance school in Devon which offers Ballet Classes to children of all ages from toddlers to teens, as well as tap classes, modern dance classes, hip hop classes and jazz dance.

We are delighted to be teaching Acrobatic Arts lessons in Newton Abbot.

Teign Valley Dance Academy also  choreographs and teaches Wedding Dance to adults for their special day.

Children have the opportunity to dance in festivals, competitions, dance displays and shows and can take ISTD dance examinations if they wish. 

 

Teign Valley Dance Academy has Dance Classes in Chudleigh, Christow, Kingsteignton and Newton Abbot with lessons held in fully equipped dance studios with sprung floor, ballet barres, mirrors and heating.

Teign Valley Dance Academy is a friendly ballet school which teaches dance to students of all ages and abilities, from toddlers' ballet to teenager classes. Pupils can dance just for fun, or the more dedicated can train for and enter the ISTD's dance examinations in Ballet, Modern and Tap. Whatever the pupils wishes, you can be sure that they will be taught in a fun relaxed atmosphere and to the highest possible standard. We want all our pupils to acheive their maximum potential in a happy and friendly environment!

 

All pupils have the opportunity to perform in local dance festivals as well as productions and showcases. This gives students a chance to show off their skills, gain confidence, and enjoy the thrill of performance.

 

Pupils are taught by an experienced and qualified teacher, Miss Bernie Cavanagh,who has undertaken extensive training in the ISTD's DDI and DDE in modern, ballet and tap.

 


 

 

Ms Bernie Cavanagh BSc FCCA ISTD (DDI)

 

has been dancing since the age of 3. She was trained at the Margaret Barnes School of Dancing in South West London where she obtained her major dance examinations in ballet, modern and tap, having gained the highest grade possible in her advanced tap. She obtained her BSc honours degree at Exeter university whilst training at the South West dance centre for contemporary dance.

 

Bernie danced professionally for a number of years working in various pantomimes, summer seasons and musicals in the U.K. including a tour of "Peter Pan" which ended in the West End. She also danced professionally in theatres, cabarets and casinos in Europe and Japan.

 

 

 

Bernie moved to Devon in 2000 and has been teaching ballet, modern, tap and street dance in various dancing schools in Devon and Cornwall.  She has entered pupils for the ISTD dance examinations in modern, ballet and tap and has achieved a 100% success rate with numerous distinctions.  She has also taught and choreographed for the local dance festivals where her pupils have won many awards.

 

She has continued her training as a qualified dance teacher under the guidance of ISTD examiners Mrs Gaynor Walter and Mrs Belinda Rand where she has obtained the DDI (Diploma in Dance Instruction) professional teaching qualification in ballet, modern and tap. Bernie is now in the final stages of her DDE qualification.

 

Bernie comes from a family of dancers with her mother and 2 sisters all being professional dancers and qualified dance teachers with their own dance schools. Bernie has 3 children Bethan, Owen and Cerys who all dance continuing the family tradition. All three children have already appeared in pantomimes and Summer Seasons in Torbay and Plymouth, and Owen spent 2 years as a Junior Associate of the Royal Ballet School. Cerys successfully auditioned for and attended Elmhurst Royal Ballet School associate programme in Plymouth, and has now begun the prestigious Ballet Boost Associate program in Dartington, Totnes. She has danced in two pantomime seasons at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth as well as in pantomimes at the Princess Theatre Torquay.  Bethan has appeared in numerous pantomimes at Princess Theatre Torquay as both junior and senior dancers, and has also danced in the Summer season shows at Babbacombe theatre as both a junior and senior dancer.
